A Final Thought
Many believe that luck plays a big part in business success. Here’s what a famous American statesman and a successful golf pro had to say about luck:
“Diligence is the mother of good luck.” – Benjamin Franklin
“The harder I work, the luckier I get.” – Gary Player

A vital step on the path to becoming your own boss is to develop a business plan. If you’re groaning at the thought of the ominous task ahead, you should know that many successful business plans have numbered fewer than 10 pages.
If you have a good idea, the pieces will fit together into a sustainable business model. The quality (creative, innovative) of the idea is the operative word, not the number of words in the business plan.
Think of your Business Plan as a Roadmap. Would you take a trip without a roadmap or your GPS? If you don’t have a Business Plan, you don’t have goals, timelines and budgets. You may have a final destination – Success – but, without a business plan you have no roadmap to get there.
Below are a few tips to follow when developing the most important element of your Business Plan: the Marketing Plan. I strongly recommend that you spend the most time on your Marketing Plan.
- Set specific marketing goals and timelines
- Know your target audience (s) thoroughly
- Research and select cost-effective media vehicles to meet your goals, i.e., e-mail marketing, search engine marketing, direct mail, advertising, special events, public relations, trade shows, and more.
- Set the budget to meet your goals
- Monitor results and make adjustments
Doing your homework, which includes extensive research and due diligence, is a prerequisite of creating your business plan. Just don’t forget (as discussed in Timing), you will need to effectively move from the Knowing stage to the Doing stage. Action-oriented individuals trump dreamers every time.

You’ve always wanted to take control of your life and be your own boss. As a business owner, after careful research and deliberation, you will be making decisions virtually every day. When it’s time to make a decision, you may initially ask yourself, “Am I making the right decision?”
Instead of freezing with indecision, you will need to decide whether to turn left or right. If you’ve made the wrong decision, use this information as a steppingstone to the next decision. View the decisions you need to make as challenges rather than obstacles.
To make decisions, you need self-confidence. (Never confuse self-confidence with arrogance and cockiness) Believe in yourself – that you have a singleness of purpose, laser-like focus and the ability and skills to succeed.
Be crystal clear that not even the greatest intellects in the world know everything. Admit your shortcomings and reach out to the professionals to Build Your Virtual Team: a lawyer for legal issues and regulations, a network engineer or web developer for technical operations, a CPA for financial advice , an experienced marketer, sales professional…to name just a few.
While working with experts in their fields, also consider taking classes to expand your knowledge. There are a multitude of resources, many of them free and online. Check out the following invaluable website for a wealth of free training: http://www.sba.gov/training/index.html

Whether you are currently employed or unemployed and still looking for a job, if you’re waiting for the right time to start your own business, you should definitely pay head to Napoleon Hill, author of one of the early inspirational guides to success, “Think and Grow Rich,” which still resonates with entrepreneurs and remains a big seller 72 years after publication.
“Don’t wait. The time will never be just right.” Napoleon Hill
In the next post, there’ll be a more detailed discussion of the necessity to conduct research and due diligence. It’s a very savvy business practice to never stop learning. However, too much of a good thing can have negative repercussions. Too many individuals insist on reading just one more book or article, taking one more seminar, listening to one more audio tape, watching one more video tape, etc., etc., etc. They get stuck in the Ready stage (READY, AIM, FIRE).
As Rich Schefren, a top internet guru frequently advises – You need to connect the Knowing with the Doing. Know when to Take Action.
Obviously there’s no timetable that fits all. First and foremost, you need to complete your business plan with input and advice from others – legal, financial, business associates, industry gurus, friends, family and mentors. Ideally, this will take weeks, not months. Once you have feedback that you’re comfortable with, quickly move from the READY stage to the AIM stage.
The AIM, or Execution stage, is the most time-consuming. You’ll be wearing your Project Manager hat at this stage. Nothing is more important at this stage than to track, measure and analyze each marketing campaign you launch. Incorporate what you’ve learned into the next campaign….then repeat. If you’ve spent any time on the internet doing research on starting your own online business, you’ve undoubtedly come across thousands of pages of sales copy “screaming” at you about how to become an internet millionaire virtually overnight. Known in the industry as “pitch pages,” these visually striking web pages consist of oversized type, screen captures of online revenue statements, free offers and sales-pitch videos with tempting, persuasive promises.
Let’s be clear. There are no “Get Rich Quickly” schemes that work! And, be sure to run away as fast as you can from promises you can become wealthy, travel to exotic places, buy antique cars, spend more time with your family and friends by working only four hours a day!
Very few, if any, win on their first try. Building a successful business – whether online or offline, home-based, retail storefront or business office — takes VERY hard work, staying power and very often personal sacrifices – starting your own business is much more than a full-time job!
For example, some of today’s best known and highly successful online entrepreneurs worked through many months and years of letdowns and disappointments before they became “instant” millionaires. These entrepreneurs include household names in the online marketing world like Rich Schefren, Mike Fulsaime, Frank Kern, Ewen Chia to name just a few. And, these internet legends still experience failures and make bad decisions. They quickly learn from these setbacks, make the necessary adjustments and move forward!
